The Way We Were:

Shawville United anniversary recalls 117 years of preaching: When Shawville United Church celebrates its anniversary this coming Sunday, with morning and evening services, it will be recalling 117 years of service in gospel preaching and spiritual ministry carried on in this district.

The first settlers came into Clarendon Township shortly after 1825. In odd clearings here and there, they settled on the land assigned to them by Col. Prendergast, the Government agent, built their log huts and made their little clearings to plant grain and potatoes. It was a hard life, with no roads, but only trails; with no comforts, and even necessities lacking. However, the Methodist saddle-bag preachers followed them along the trails, gathered a few settlers at various points for worship; often in the open air, with a tree-stump for a pulpit. These first missionaries, so the records show, came as early as 1827 from the Bonnechere circuit across the river, or up the river by canoe from Hull.
